Why does our network sucks?

I have been wondering this for a very long time now. One of the things that a person expects from a B-school is to build an excellent network - something which helps you when you are looking for that right job or hoping to start something on our own. But I have realized that when I compare B with other two schools (A and C) - our network is really down in dumps - there is only very little inter-batch communication and of course alumni site ( which seems to change every year ) has hardly any traffic or content. First of all why is this happening? My take is that alumni secretary is a defunct position where it is assumed that only activity they need to carry out is the alumni meet - which of course hardly ever has any agenda - it is no better than a class reunion party. I have not seen any other activity being carried out by the alumni secy. Pls correct me if I am wrong in my criticism and yes this is not directed against any individual.

Of course by now all of you are thinking that it is easy to lambast someone else (in this case the successive alumni secys) but what next? Well guys lets create a unified platform to bring all IIMB alumni together - let us not depend on alumni secy. For starters do we have an alumni union? At least I am not aware of one - if yes then lets revive it and if not, then lets create one with chapters across the world. Let us also try and bring out an alum directory on an annual basis through this union and a biannual or (if possible a quartely) news letter - though I think a blog would be a better idea but then not all members may be so blog savvy. Any views on this?

well
for starters an alumni directory is a good idea.
instead of poor alum sec we can share the work ourselves. Need just 10 volunteers. Each girl/guy willing to track down just 20 people and hunt out their data...
First if Gundurao will oblige with a student list (for us to divide) responsibilities...
calling volunteers

Hi Alam,

When I meant an Alum directory - I meant across the batches right from 70s to 2000s- yes we need volunteers (of course count me in) but we need to track down many more people - so perhaps it would need a more concerted effort than just few volunteers working on their own -any ideas??

and yes Alum secy is not 'poor' - when they contest for these posts they should very well know the responsibility that they are taking up...

I will be volunteer #3. Count me in. Kashew, yeah tune bahoot sahi bola yaar. We need more network. And even within our own batch, we need just more than e-mails that say "i am getting married" or " i had a baby" or "intersting job post".
Yes the alumni network needs to be developed across batches. Mayb we can start dividing people by regions e.g. mumbai, delhi, Nyc, CA etc. Mumbai wd need more volunteers to track people since I presume a hell of a lot of concentration of alumni would be there.

hi,

dont think you guys know me but im a junior (05 batch)

ive wondered the same thing- good post. when working for the alumni meet, we realized how poorly our info on all alumni was updated- 30% of ppl we called had either changed numbers or had shifted jobs etc...to have a good alumni n/w i feel we need to ensure that an up to date database is critical.

i once stumbled on the iima alumni site...was impressed to see that they had webpages for each batch, and every move (firm or region) was carefully documented.

the next step wud be to involve the participation of alumni in activities other than the alumni meet which 80% of alumni anywayz dont attend, as you rightly pointed out. the current batch had a good initiative wherein they asked alumni volunteers working in ibanks to help out ibanking summer interns. i thought that was v useful and shud be continued.

a lot of initiatives cud be thought of but i think the first step is a v accurate uptodate database of alumni (residence addresses, contact nos, firm they work for etc)
